From November 14th to November 16th, the Startup Weekend Grenoble Mountains and Sports will take place in St Martin d’Hères. A huge opportunity to share ideas, create teams, innovate and launch products and start-ups.
This affords Avant Garde the opportunity to dwell on the Startup Weekend Paris Fashion and Tech that unfolded during Paris Fashion Week in the heart of the Sentier fashion district.
But first and foremost, what is a Startup Weekend exactly?
Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is encouraged to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers.
Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing and market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
Why DO you need to participate?
- It pushes you to think, instead of ignoring ideas and chance of innovation around you.
- It helps timid people to go out of their comfort zone, to talk to others, trying to express themselves more.
- You will learn about the way of thinking as an entrepreneur, and you will acquire a basic sense of startup.
- You will cooperate with people with different background and experience the culture shock!
Focus on the Startup Weekend Paris Fashion & Tech edition
The main objective of that weekend was to concentrate on building out ideas that lend towards the Fashion and Retail industry.
Fashion Innovations could represent anything truly new, disruptive and high-growth in the fashion vertical. Often that meant employing new materials in new ways, finding a way to automate manual processes, creating methods to aggregate and analyze useful information, or establishing a new product category.
The thing interesting is that the project is based on community traction mechanisms.
Let’s discover the record of Zhongqi Zhang, who follow the MSc in Fashion, Design and Luxury Management program at Grenoble École de Management.
« It was an amazing journey in Paris. It was the first time I went to the city, although I didn’t get enough time to enjoy the beautiful view there, I still had an unforgettable journey.
In the campaign, everyone could pitch his own idea on the stage, then we had to share our own idea with others to convince them and earn their votes. Those selected by others would have one more chance to get deeper with their ideas in public, stating the aspects that they may need help.
As far as I am concerned, the process was like selling my ideas or even “selling myself”, which was both a challenge and an opportunity for me. My idea as an application for Asian women to improve their skin condition was chosen to go further during the weekend. I got a basic sense of business model and revenue model, came up with an idea by brainstorming, then tried to put an idea into practice by designing immediately a homepage and putting it on Twitter and Facebook, during which I also got help and support from professors and specialists.
Also, I worked with four French people and was charge of the group. As a group leader, I also needed to motivate my group members because some group members failed to complete their own work in time. Naturally I also experienced cultural shock, they preferred to speak French and it was difficult for me to follow them. However they were all nice and I felt lucky to meet them.
Finally, although we didn’t won the chance to go to the final competition in Poznan, there was still a lady from the jury that was interested in our project, and wanted to set up a lunch meet with us. Besides my presentation and communication skills have improved a lot.
In my opinion, since I already have an idea which I want to make it realize, it was a great campaign for me to learn more about the business tools and way of thinking as an entrepreneur. Besides, the activity inspires everyone to notice ideas around them, and make everyone realized that anyone can be creative and innovative.”
